AUG_Q-1>>THE WORD "X"...
The first appearance of this word is from 1780's and means an odd or eccentric person. It later acquired a meaning of to make fun of, or to mock. There is a well-known myth about the word "X", which says that in early 1790's a Dublin theater proprietor named "Y" made a bet that he could introduce a word into the language within 48 hours. He then went out and hired a group of street urchins to write the word "X", which was a nonsense word, on walls around the city of Dublin. Within a day, the word was common currency and had acquired a meaning (since no one knew what it meant, everyone thought it was some sort of test).'X' was also used as a name for a kind of toy, something like a yo-yo, which was popular around 1790.
